Martin Schoeller
Portrait photographer, Germany.
Martin Schoeller (German, b. 1968) is one of the world’s preeminent contemporary portrait photographers. He is most known for his extreme-close up portraits, a series in which familiar faces are treated with the same scrutiny as the unfamous. The stylistic consistency of this work creates a democratic platform for comparison between his subjects, challenging a viewer’s existing notions of celebrity, value and honesty. Schoeller’s portraits are exhibited and collected internationally.
Eyes do not lie. Our mouths and brains may betray us, but through the eyes the truth is seen.
Eyes do not lie
Eyes say so much about our hopes and dreams, our fears, our loves, our suffering, our shared humanity. Eyes do not lie. Our mouths and brains may betray us, but through the eyes the truth is seen. At a time when so many of us “don’t see eye to eye”, when ideologies are in conflict, communication strained and words may be contradictory to our true feelings, lets focus on each other’s eyes.
A mirror of ourselves
Let’s try to understand one another beyond words, beyond ideas even, just by our shared humanity.
And what is a better mirror of ourselves, of who we are, than our eyes? Maybe viscerally, through eye contact, we can achieve a higher understanding of one another.
Let’s try to understand one another beyond words, beyond ideas even, just by our shared humanity.
